Symbolism in the Annunciation: Designs for a 15th c. Flemish interior space

Designing an interior bedroom which could have realistically existed in 15th century Flanders that would also be reflective of Mary was a unique challenge. The Annunciation is a scene known for its nuance of symbolism.

There are many motifs of lilies in the room as they symbolically reference Mary’s purity and the absence of original sin. The tiles on the floor are emulative of roses, as Mary is referred to as the rose without thorns. There are rosettes within the wood carvings in the furniture of the room, as well as rosettes in the stained glass of the windows.

The Triptych which in the back of the room will be a devotional image of Moses striking the rock, because Mary was a pious Jewish woman.

IHS is a reference to the holy initials of Jesus, and this motif will be painted on the ceiling of this interior space.
